A take on Penang Free , the oldest school in Malaysia. In fact it is the first English Medium School in South East Asia.Founded in 1816 by Rev.Sparke Hutchings. The original premise of this iconic school, today houses the Penang State Museum. In 1928 they moved to the current premise in jalan Masjid Negeri. The motto of the school is Fortis Atque Fidelis, which is Latin for STRONG AND FAITHFUL.Some of the noted Alumni include The late TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN PUTRA AL-HAJ(1st Prime Minister of Malaysia), P.Ramlee,Tan Sri Eusoffe Abdoolcader(Judge),Datuk Eddy Chong(Badminton Star) and Tan Sri Elyas Omar(1 st Datuk Bandar of KL).
In 1966 the school celebrated its Sesqui Centenery( 150 years celebration). Many Souvenir items were issued as a form of rememberance to mark the historic event.Among others were, First Day covers,Souvenir booklets/books and the Tray as seen above in the picture.
In 2016 Penang Free will be 200 years old! Phew! thats a record of sorts. The Tray might look normal but in 6 years time it would certainly be much sought after by the Old Frees(old boys). It is certainly going to fetch a good price then.
